Shameless is excellent, compelling television right from the first moment the pilot episode premiered.
The show follows a highly dysfunctional family of Frank Gallagher, a single father of six children. While Frank spends most of his days and nights drunk wandering about Southside Chicago, his children have learned to raise themselves. The eldest daughter, Fiona, hastily tries to hold the family together–and surprisingly succeeds. Phillip (Lip) is the oldest son who spends his days either smoking pot or screwing the girl next door. Ian, the middle son, is a relatively closeted gay and works at a small grocery store in town where he routinely takes his “friends” in the back room or against an isle. Eleven year old Debbie, who runs a daycare center out of their home during the summer, is kind and helpful with a good heart–who is also stealing money from her own UNICEF collection. Ten-year-old Carl is a budding sociopath and an arsonist who (thanks to Grammy) has a unique skill set of cooking meth. Toddler Liam is–well, he might actually be black, but nobody seems to have a clue how.
